PHNOM PENH – The Overseas Press Club of Cambodia condemns the intimidation of Cambodia Daily reporter, Zsombor Peter via social media.
Last night, Information Minister Khieu Kanharith posted a picture of Peter’s passport to his Facebook page where it remains at the time of writing. He included a note to journalists to make sure they know the law.
The post came following complaints from Romam Yuot, a commune chief in Ratanakkiri province, that Peter and veteran reporter Aun Pheap had asked inappropriate questions and disrespected the National Election Committee’s law “that does not allow discussion of politics during the election campaign.”
The OPCC condemns the lack of due process that led to a reporter’s identity to be shared in a potentially dangerous and defamatory way. We urge members of the Royal Government, police and any associates to remove this information from the internet.
